Career Mentorship: Finding a Mentor and Developing Your Skills

Finding a mentor sounds straightforward until you try to do it. Who do you reach out to? What do you say? And once you have a mentor, how do you make sure the relationship actually helps you grow? These are questions many designers and product managers avoid thinking about until they are stuck, and by then, the pressure to figure it out alone can feel even heavier.

This course walks through the full mentorship process, from identifying the right career mentor for the stage you are at to approaching them with confidence and making the most of your time together. You will learn what to prepare before your first session, which questions to ask, how to set meaningful career goals, and how to track your progress so the relationship moves forward with purpose.

Beyond one-on-one dynamics, the material covers the different formats mentorship can take. One-on-one mentorship works differently from structured mentorship programs, and understanding the benefits of each helps you choose the format that fits your needs. You will also explore the etiquette and communication practices that make mentorship relationships productive and respectful on both sides.

Giving and receiving feedback is one of the most valuable skills you can build through mentorship, and both directions get real attention here. You will learn how to ask for feedback that is specific and useful, and how to deliver it in a way that genuinely helps someone grow.

The mentor side of the relationship gets dedicated coverage, too. Whether you are already guiding others or thinking about stepping into that role, you will learn what makes a mentor effective, how to support a mentee's growth without overstepping, and what a strong mentoring relationship looks like in practice.
